Make Music

COVID-19 Statement

“Make Music Day, the worldwide music celebration held each June 21, the summer solstice, is going virtual this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, organizers officially announced [May 6, 2020]. Typically featuring over 5,000 free outdoor concerts, performances, music lessons, jam sessions and other musical events on streets, sidewalks, parks and other public spaces across the U.S., this year’s celebration will take a virtual approach to encourage all people, of all musical abilities, to celebrate the joy of making music. More than 85 U.S. cities and the entire states of Connecticut, Hawaii, Vermont and Wisconsin will take part in Make Music Day 2020, further demonstrating the power of music to unite and uplift people, spread joy and build community amid this challenging and unprecedented time.”

Make Music Rochester is modeled after a Parisian tradition (Fête de la Musique) that began in 1982 as a tribute to the Summer Solstice.  More specifically, each June 21st Paris is filled with musicians of all kinds performing on sidewalks, lawns, balconies, in parks, etc. for anyone to enjoy at no cost.  In 2007, Fête de la Musique crossed the Atlantic with the debut of Make Music New York.  Ever since, cities around the world have been starting their own Make Music days.  In fact, in 2016 there were 38 North American cities that gave 3,238 concerts at 1,078 locationsall on a single day!

In 2017, our founding members felt it was time this beautiful celebration come to Rochester!!  We hope that this sort of “pop-up”/”organic” event will help activate spaces that are frequently overlooked (i.e. lawns, parks) and play a role in strengthening the Rochester community.

Join us for the fourth annual Make Music Rochester happening virtually on Sunday, June 21, 2020 from 11am to 11pm!! All Ages | Free

None of this would be possible without our gracious host organization, the Community Design Center Rochester.
